To contribute to the collective local, national, and global effort to advance Open science, the University of Lille supports the Open science ecosystem.
What does "a contribution" mean?
When the University of Lille makes a contribution to the Open science ecosystem, it's participating in the overall development of Open science in research communities. It is a contribution that fosters the development of stakeholders and initiatives at the national and international levels. Its impact extends beyond the scope of our institution.
The contribution can be financial or take the form of staff members' involvement.
What do the financial contributions cover?
- subscriptions to tools or platforms
- memberships in Open science associations
- contributions to Open science initiatives, with no compensation other than the visibility of our contribution
How much does the University of Lille allocate to financial support for the open science ecosystem?

Some of these contributions are based on the savings achieved by canceling the Springer subscription.
This support has made it possible to fund 21 organisations, including:
- Peer Community In, a service for recommending and publishing preprints;
- Software Heritage, an open archive for research source code and software;
- ORCID, the international organisation that assigns persistent digital identifiers (ORCID iDs) to researchers and authors of academic and scientific works;
- HAL, the French national open archive (the University of Lille's portal: https://lilloa.hal.science);
- ISTEX, infrastructure for text-mining services;
- DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals), the database of open access, peer-reviewed scholarly journals
